Casa Colorada

Chichen Itza - Casa Colorada
T

he "Casa Colorada", also called "Red House" because of the remnants of red paint that once decorated its inner walls, was constructed between 600 -900 AD.

Seated on a 5 meter-high stone-faced platform, it is located between the Caracol and Ossuary. The building's relatively simple, restrained Puuc façade includes three flat Chac masks on a roof comb. Three doorways with glyphs on their lintels lead into a corridor whose back wall contains a long glyphic text dated from 869 to 870 AD, describing blood-letting and fire ceremonies.
